Casey County gave up two touchdowns in 17 seconds early in the game Friday and never threatened Wayne County in a 48-7 defeat at Monticello.
Wayne (7-1, 2-1 Class AAA, District 4) scored its first touchdown 2 minutes, 34 seconds into the game, then tacked on another one moments later following the first of four turnovers by Casey (2-6, 1-2) to take a 13-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first quarter.
Six different players scored touchdowns for the Cardinals, who had 200 rushing yards and 179 passing yards and outgained the Rebels better than 3 to 1.
Wayne led 27-0 at halftime and scored three times more in the third quarter before Rance Carman scored Casey’s only touchdown on a 7-yard run with 6:55 remaining in the game.
Casey was held to 119 yards, with Alex Bolin rushing for 93 yards on 25 carries. Carman had 17 yards on six attempts for the Rebels, who averaged 3 yards per rushing attempt.
Quarterback Wyatt Bishop was 0 for 5 with one interception, and the Rebels also fumbled four times and lost three of them.
Cody Rhule ran for two touchdowns and Tyler Guffey threw two touchdown passes for Wayne.
