McKinney wins — At Lexington, Danville’s Andrew McKinney shot a 71 to take medalist honors at the Commodore Invitational at Tates Creek Golf Course.
Danville finished fifth out of 22 teams with a score of 318. Dunbar won with a 305, followed by Sayre (308), Ballard (313) and Tates Creek (314).
J.B. Williams shot 78 for the Admirals, Spencer McKinney had an 84 and Nick Serey shot 87.
“Although it was a beautiful day, the golf course wasn't giving up low scores today,” Danville coach Marc Williams said. "The greens were soft for full shots, leaving the ball far from the pin, yet on shots around and on the green, the ball frequently ran past the hole. A lot of the golfers were frustrated by the lack of scoring opportunities.
“Andrew played great. After a bogey-bogey start, he settled down to grinding out pars on the front side, and on the back side he made three birdies. He was the only player under par, and none of the teams finished below 300. He showed everybody what patient golf is all about.”
Garrard County Invitational — At Stanford, Collin Gay of Garrard County led area scorers with an 81 Saturday at the Garrard County Invitational at Dix River Country Club.
Lincoln County led area teams with a ninth place finish with a score of 361. Garrard County was 11th, followed by Mercer County in 12th and Casey County in 13th. Corbin won the team title with a 296, followed by Franklin County (316) and Meade County (323).
Lincoln was led by Zach Johnson’s 82, Tyler Bennett shot 86 to lead Mercer and Justin Russell and Colton Patterson each shot 88 for Casey.
