The Boyle County boys gave up a goal with 15 seconds remaining and dropped a 2-1 decision to Scott County in their season opener Tuesday night at Georgetown.
Scott (1-0) scored the winning goal when a forward sliced through the defense and bounced a shot off the far post and into the net. Boyle (0-1) managed to get off a shot in the closing seconds, but it was wide.
“What a heartbreaker tonight’s game was. This was a battle between two evenly matched teams. Both teams played with a lot of enthusiasm and fire,” Boyle coach Cris McMann said. “It was a disappointing loss for us, but we have much to be proud of.”
Scott broke a scoreless tie in the 65th minute, but the Rebels rallied to tie the game in the 73rd minute on a 6-yard shot by Kyle Settle following a throw-in into the box by J.T. Stephens.
The Rebels had only three shots on goal to the Cardinals’ 12 and were outshot 14-6 overall, and McMann said they missed “at least two very good scoring opportunities.”
Boyle goalkeeper Bailey Snow had 10 saves.
“He made many good saves to keep us in the game,” McMann said.
Corbin 8, Garrard County 0 — At Corbin, Garrard (0-1) lost its first game under coach Kevin Green to vastly more experienced Corbin (1-0).
“That was a very skilled, very disciplined team that we played,” Green said. “They had 17 seniors on the roster, and seeing as we had only have 21 total players, when they only had four less players who are seniors that have played together that long, its going to be tough.”
Green said he thinks the young Golden Lions will continue to improve.
“I told the boys that it’s a first game, there’s going to be some kinks, not to worry about it, and we’re going to come back strong. We’re going to get past this and move on,” he said.
