Prep Soccer: Danville, Mercer boys cruise in 12th Region first round
Shawn Ramos scored three goals Monday to lead the Danville boys to an 8-0 victory over Monticello in the first round of the 12th Region Tournament at Harrodsburg.
Christian Gateskill-Fuqua also scored twice for Danville (12-7-2), which began its quest for a fourth straight regional title with an easy victory in which it held a 23-1 advantage in shots over Monticello (2-15-3).
The Admirals advance to a semifinal matchup Wednesday with host Mercer County, the team it defeated in both district and regional championship games last season. Mercer defeated Pulaski County 5-0 in Monday’s first game.
Danville led 4-0 at halftime after three goals by Ramos and one by Gateskill-Fuqua. Gateskill-Fuqua opened the second-half scoring, and the Admirals also got goals form Calvin Steber, Carson Coulter and Cesar Barradas.
Coulter, Ramos, Seth Massoud and Noe Ayala had assists for the Admirals.
The Trojans’ only shot came late in the first half.
Mercer County 5, Pulaski County 0 — Landon Souder and Mason Angel scored two goals each for Mercer (19-3-1) in its first-round rout, while Pulaski (9-9) managed only two shots.
The Titans didn’t score until the 31st minute, when Souder scored off a pass from Alex Bosse. Angel scored off a one-on-one opportunity 4 minutes later, giving them a 2-0 halftime lead.
"We played our weakest 30 minutes of the season tonight. Fortunately for us, Pulaski didn't have the guns to capitalize on our lack of effort,” Mercer assistant coach Tim Shannon said.
Matt Gammon scored off a Dylan Carss assist 3 1/2 minutes into the second half, Souder scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute and Angel scored in the 65th minute for Mercer.
The Titans had 35 shots, including 21 on goal.
Southwestern meets West Jessamine and Lincoln County faces Somerset in tonight's first-round doubleheader.
