Kyle Settle scored two goals and assisted on another Tuesday night as the Boyle County boys defeated Franklin County 3-1 at Danville.
Host Boyle (3-6-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game just before halftime, then flew past Franklin (4-3-1)¿in the second half to snap a two-game losing streak.
After Franklin had scored in the 22nd minute, Settle tied the game at 1-all when Settle headed a ball in off a throw-in by J.T. Stephens with 2 seconds left in the first half.
“That goal really fired us up and knocked the wind out of Franklin,” Boyle coach Cris McMann said.
Settle scored on another header in the 54th minute off a pass from Galen Overstreet, and he passed a ball that James Warriner flicked into the net 3 minutes later to cap the scoring for the Rebels.
Two Franklin players drew two red cards, and the Flyers were unable to mount an attack while playing two men down.
“We received no yellow cards. My guys showed a lot of composure. I'm very proud of their performance,” McMann said.
Boyle outshot Franklin 8-6, and Boyle goalkeeper Connor Burns had two saves.
Mercer County 2, East Jessamine 0 — At Harrodsburg, No. 14 Mercer (9-2-1, 3-0 46th District)¿clinched the top seed for the 46th District Tournament by beating East Jessamine (1-6-1, 0-2)¿for its second district win in three days and its sixth shutout of the season.
Alex Bosse assisted on both goals for the host Titans, passing to James Stinnett for a goal in the 75th minute and chipping to Mason Angel for another 4 minutes later.
Mercer controlled the ball for most of the game, outshooting East Jessamine 25-1, but the game stayed scoreless until the closing minutes.
“(They) came in with a plan to bunker down and counterattack, and that plan worked well for the most part,” Mercer assistant coach Tim Shannon said. “The East keeper kept them in this one. ... A¿lot of (his saves) were very big.”
Garrard County 8, Monticello 6 — At Monticello, Jesse Ray scored five goals as Garrard (2-4) outslugged Monticello (1-8-1) for its second straight win.
Barry Rich scored two goals and Dylan Ward got his first career goal for the Golden Lions, who exceeded the combined goal total of their previous five games.
“Our offense was firing on all cylinders tonight, and it was good to see. I feel like our first win got the ball rolling, and it got our confidence up and got us playing like we know how to play,” Garrard coach Kevin Green said.
It was the highest-scoring game of the season for both teams, and Green said he thinks that was largely due to poor field conditions.
“It was tough for the defense to play the ball because the field was rough,” he said. “I honestly do not believe that our defense would have given up six goals had been used to playing on a surface like that or had we been playing on a surface we were used playing on.”
Western Hills 4, Danville 1 — At Frankfort, visiting Danville (6-3-2) saw a six-game unbeaten streak end with a loss to Western Hills (9-0-1).
Christian Gateskill-Fuqua scored the Admirals’ only goal on a free kick late in the second half.
“We were a little outmatched by a very good Western Hills team,” Danville coach Brent Beauman said. “The game was a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests. We played a much better second half and started picking up our hustle. These are great games for us, tough competition that will prepare us our tough region."
