Prep Soccer: Mercer boys beat Marion 3-1
Matt Gammon scored two goals to lead the Mercer County boys to a 3-1 victory over Marion County on Thursday at Lebanon.
Gammon scored off a pass from James Stinnett in the 28th minute after Mercer (3-0-1) dominated the possession through the first quarter of the game. In the 53rd minute, he took a long pass from Daniel Steele and blew by the Marion defense for his second goal to give the Titans a 3-1 lead.
Mercer had 17 shots on goal and allowed Marion (3-2) only two, and the Titans outshot the Knights 28-6 in all.
Mason Angel also scored for Mercer, connecting from outside the penalty box with about 2 minutes left in the first half after Landon Souder drew pressure inside the box and kicked the ball back out.
Marion’s only goal came on a corner kick less than 2 minutes into the second half.
Danville 2, Somerset 1 — At Danville, Shawn Ramos scored both goals for Danville (2-2-1) as the Admirals defeated Somerset (2-1-1).
Freshman Hayden Boyd earned his first career assist for the Admirals, placing a corner kick that Ramos converted for the winning goal.
"This was a much better game for us,” Danville coach Brent Beauman said. “We probably took more shots tonight than had in the previous four games. It was good to see us start to click on the offensive side of the ball. I hope we keep this moment going as we continue to improve throughout the season.”
Monticello 4, Burgin 0 — At Harrodsburg, Burgin (0-5) couldn’t connect on any of its 20 shots in a loss to Monticello (1-5).
Goalkeeper Brendin Hardin had 20 saves for the Bulldogs.
Girls
Danville 1, South Laurel 1 —¿ At London, after a scoreless first half, Danville (1-1-2)¿and host South Laurel (1-3-1)¿each scored a goal and played to a draw.
South Laurel scored with 19 minutes to play, then Danville struck back when Alexa Burks scored on a direct kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Goalkeeper Katie Nelson had seven saves for the Admirals.
