After dropping a one-goal decision to Male on Friday, the Mercer County boys soccer team came back with a vengeance Saturday, blanking Elizabethtown 6-0 in the Purples’ Classic at Bowling Green.
Alex Bosse had three goals for Mercer, which led 2-0 at the half against Elizabethtown.
Bosse got the Titans on the board 19 minutes into the game, scoring off a rebound. Ten minutes later, Matt Gammon also scored off a rebound to give Mercer (7-2-1) a two goal halftime lead.
In the second half, Bosse scored off of James Stinnett’s corner kick in the 46th minute, then got his hat trick two minutes later. Chase Barnett scored 13 minutes later off a pass from Jawan Smith, and Ty Byrd scored in the 80th minute to cap the Titans’ scoring.
"This was what we needed, we were able to get everyone substantial clock, giving our starters some rest after the past two battles with Collins and Male,”¿Mercer assistant Tim Shannon said.
Mercer added a 3-0 win over South Warren in Saturday evening’s second game.
Male 3, Mercer County 2 — The Bulldogs led at the half, then held off a Mercer rally in the first game of the Purples’ Classic on Friday.
Gammon scored off a pass from Nathan Sheehan 1 minute, 23 seconds into the match, but Male led 2-1 at the half and held a 3-1 edge before Mason Angel scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out with trim the Male lead to a goal with 4 minutes to go, but the Titans could get no closer.
Male outshot Mercer 16-14, and each team had 11 shots on goal.
