Mercer County won the match, but suffered a devastating loss in the process.
The Titans beat Madison Central 4-3 in the Stonerside Cup on Thursday at Bourbon County, but lost keeper Slade Ransdell for the season with a broken leg.
"This was a terrible injury, and it has to come at a time like this. The team is on a roll and Slade has been a monster in the goal," Mercer coach Tim Shannon said.
The injury occurred late in the first half. Down 2-1, Ransdell came out to stop an attack and he and a Madison¿Central player kicked the ball at the same time and their shins collided as well, breaking Ransdell’s leg. Travis Fox then moved into goal.
Daniel Steele scored with three minutes left in the first half to make it a 2-2 game at the half. In the second half, Matthew Gammon was moved to forward, and scored on a break away, beating the Indians’ keeper one-on-one to make it 3-2 Mercer.
Madison Central tied the game late in the contest, but Mercer answered with 10 minutes to play as Gammon scored again on a pass from Steele to get the win and move the Titans to 7-0-2.
Mercer got on the board first when Landon Souder headed a ball in off a corner kick from Matthew Raskin. Madison Central scored on an own goal.
Boyle County 7, Taylor County 0 — At Danville, Alex Svecke scored three times and Kyle Settle had a pair of goals as the Rebels blanked visiting Taylor County.
“This was a great game for us. We were obviously very hungry and aggressive,”¿Bole coach Cris McMann said. “Our defensive pressure pretty much smothered anything Taylor County tried to do. We moved the ball around quickly and were not afraid to take shots.”
Svecke scored three minutes into the game off a pass from Lucas Edelen, then scored four minutes later on a pass from J.T. Stephens.
Settle scored twice off assists from Josh Lyons and Logan Smith to make it 4-0 score at the half.
In the second half, Svecke scored on a Lyons assists and Svecke then assisted on a goal from Garrett Bredar. In the final minute of the game, Jonathan Carman got his first varsity goal on an assist from Stephens.
Boyle outshot Taylor 43-5 and had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Bailey Snow had five saves to get the shutout.
Girls
Boyle County 10, Taylor County 0 — At Danville, Boyle got its third straight shutout, and sixth of the season, and nine players scored in an easy win over Taylor County.
Alex Combs scored twice, Kennedy Collier and Alexis Kerbaugh each had a goal and assist, Miranda Wray had her first varsity assist and Katie Upton and Savanah Stevens also had goals for Boyle (7-2-1). It was Stevens’ first varsity goal.
