Prep Soccer: No. 9 Mercer boys drub Danville; Boyle upsets No. 18 KCD
Mason Angel scored three goals and Alex Bosse had two Wednesday night as No. 9 Mercer County defeated Danville 6-1 in a matchup of teams that have played for a regional title in each of the last two years.
Daniel Steele had two assists for Mercer (16-3-1), which scored three goals in each half to beat Danville (9-6-2) for its 11th win in 12 games.
The Titans outshot the Admirals 20-7 and had an 11-3 lead in shots on goal.
“(We) were defiantly the aggressors in this one, controlling the tempo and the possession,” Mercer assistant coach Tim Shannon said.
Mercer ended a long losing streak against Danville last year with a 3-2 regular-season win but lost in both the district and regional championship games. The teams are no longer in the same district.
Bosse started the scoring for the Titans 96 seconds into the game by poking in a shot off a rebound, then scored again in the 14th minute off an assist by Landon Souder. Souder scored 6 minutes later when a long pass from Steele left him with a one-on-one opportunity, giving Mercer a 3-0 halftime lead.
Angel scored twice on consecutive steals near midfield in the second half, then completed a hat trick in the 67th minute off a pass from Steele.
Shawn Ramos scored Danville’s only goal with 50 seconds remaining.
Boyle County 5, Kentucky Country Day 3 — At Louisville, Kyle Settle and James Warriner scored two goals each to lead Boyle (5-8) over No. 18 KCD (12-4-1).
Playing for the first time in 11 days, the Rebels outshot the Bearcats 17-11 and had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
“This was a big win against a ranked team. I think this may have been the best we've played so far this season,” Boyle coach Cris McMann said. “Our defense was composed and patient. Our midfield worked hard to win 50-50 balls and make smart passes. And our forwards made good runs and finished scoring chances.”
Boyle got off its first shot in the first minute, but it was KCD that scored first in the 10th minute.
The Rebels tied the game 10 seconds later when Hunter Overstreet headed in a goal off a pass from Ethan Edwards. They fell behind 3-1 before Warriner scored off a Peyton Cocanougher corner kick in the 29th minute.
Boyle tied the game in the 59th minute on an unassisted goal by Settle and took the lead on a goal by Settle in the 63rd. Warriner scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute.
