The No. 16 Mercer County boys knocked off two ranked teams this past weekend to capture the Colonel Classic at Bourbon County.
On Sunday, the Titans, who have won eight straight and are 13-2-1, beat No. 11 Woodford County 3-1 in the championship game.
In th 5th minute, Mason¿Angel connected with Landon Souder to put the Titans up 1-0. In the 19th minute, Souder scored again off a throw-in from Corey Brown. Seven minutes later, Souder assisted on¿Alex Bosse’s goal to give Mercer a 3-0 lead.
Woodford did not score until the 71st minute. Mercer outshot the Yellowjackets 10-5. Souder was named tournament MVP and won the Golden Boot award for his four goals, and Angela and Dylan Carss were named the all-tournament team.
On Saturday, Mercer took out two opponents, starting with Montgomery county.
Angel and Souder each scored in the 2-1 win. Montgomery went up first, but Souder scored on a penalty kick right before halftime. In the second half, Angel got out on a breakaway late in the second half and scored for the lead. Mercer outshot the Indians 13-3.
In the second round, the Titans upset No. 3 Henry Clay 1-0.
After a scoreless first half, Souder scored five minutes into the second half off a corner kick from Matthew Raskin.
"We put together the best defensive performance of the season. I would call it, ferocious" Mercer assistant coach Shannon said. “"Montgomery County, Henry Clay and Woodford in 30 hours, that is a pretty tall order for anybody.”
