Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis said on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC-TV that the first thing he’ll do when he does go to the¿NBA is “buy a car, a Bentley.”
Davis is in Los Angeles to be presented the John R. Wood Award at 36th Annual Wooden Award Gala tonight at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
“I have been thinking since I was little about a white on white Bentley. Cruise around the streets and show everybody I have got a little money,” said Davis. “You only live once.”
A Bentley costs in the $200,000 to $300,000 range, but Davis is expected to be the first pick in the June NBA draft, even though he emphasized again he has not made a final decision about leaving UK.
“I have to sit down with my coach and family. I¿might stay in school. I might take over your job,” Davis told Kimmel. “My mom wants me to stay in school. She really doesn’t care about basketball. She cares about education. My dad looks at her like, ‘Are you crazy?’”
He joked that he might tell coach John Calipari he will “just play all games, no practice, no classes” if he comes back before praising his coach.
“Coach Cal wants us to go out there and do the best for us. He keeps it real and does not lie to us. He will tell you what he thinks is the best decision for you and will help you,” Davis said.
Davis led the Wildcats in scoring (14.2), rebounding (10.4), blocks (4.7) and field goal percentage (.623), while helping to lead Kentucky to its eighth national championship. He broke the school record, SEC record and NCAA freshman record for blocks in a season.
Kimmel told Davis, “you are nuts if you don’t go (to the NBA)” and asked why Davis was still even going to class.
“Coach Cal is forcing us go to class. I don’t know why. We just won a national championship,” Davis joked.
He said he was supposed to give a speech in a communications class and had to ask the professor to push it back twice since UK¿had just won the national championship.
“I am playing a little game with him,” Davis joked.
The UK freshman told Kimmel it was “crazy” when the team got back to Lexington and that he had gotten little sleep since Monday night. He noted that UK fans “die and live Kentucky basketball.”
Davis laughed and smiled a lot during his time on the show, including when Kimmel asked about his unibrow and even showed a picture of Davis’ mother wearing a mask with a unibrow during the SEC Tournament in New Orleans last month.
“When I first got to Kentucky, guys were saying I needed to cut it and it did not look good. After a while,¿I decided it is me, my brand. I like the way it is,” Davis said. “I may keep it forever. There is no need to cut it. I am trying to set a new trend.”
