People and things.
Johnny Harmon.
Let me add my condolences to the Harmon family after the former Boyle County High School three-sport standout died Sunday following a farm accident.
Harmon later was a star fast-pitch softball player and in recent years had been instrumental in the development of the Boyle County Middle School softball program.
He was my mailman for years, and always had a smile. When he gave up his walking route, he went door-to-door explaining why he was opting for a route where he would be driving, not walking.
I never heard Harmon say a bad word about anyone, or heard anyone say a bad word about him.
I already miss his smile and soft voice. I had many, many sports conversations with him over the years, and enjoyed them all. There are not nearly enough Johnny Harmons in the world, and losing him so suddenly is still hard to accept.
Mary Cait Rolph.
Congratulations to Danville senior cheerleader Mary Cait Rolph for receiving the Scarlette Parsley Hooker Academic Scholarship for Region 12 during the regional cheerleading competition. She recently was honored as the Danville Office Equipment Scholar-Athlete of the Week and one was one of seven Danville cheerleaders to receive an academic award for having a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher.
Hooker is a former cheerleader who was killed in a 2006 plane crash at Bluegrass Field, and this scholarship honors her memory.
Alumni football.
Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games in this area. Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up and the first 40 players on each team get to play. The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home field advantage.
This year, Gridiron Alumni would like to bring alumni football to the whole state of Kentucky. Teams from Danville, Boyle County, Mercer County, Lincoln County and Garrard County are among those forming now. Games are scheduled for March and April, but spots and game dates fill up fast.
If you or someone you know is interested in playing, please go to http://www.gridironalumni.com to register. If you have any questions, contact Chris Hall at (530) 410-6396.
Kentucky football.
University of Kentucky seniors Taiedo Smith and Ronnie Sneed will play in the Battle of Florida All-Star Game Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla. The game features players from North Florida battling against players from South Florida. Players must be eligible for the National Football League draft and have either been born in Florida or have played high school or college football in Florida. Former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden will coach the North, while UK Athletics Hall of Famer and former UK letterman Howard Schnellenberger will coach the South.
Smith played in 32 games with three starts while at Kentucky. Smith made his biggest play in the final game of his career when he intercepted Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray to seal the Wildcats’ first win against the Volunteers in 27 years. Smith, who missed much of the past two seasons because of injury, finished the 2011 season with nine tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Sneed played in 42 career games for UK, making 25 consecutive starts to end his career. Sneed finished his career with 148 tackles, 133 tackles in just his junior and senior seasons. During the 2011 season, Sneed had 71 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions.
The game will be broadcast live nationwide on the Fox College Sports channel. Kickoff for the game is set for 8 p.m.
