STANFORD — Shade Jacobs was going to make the most of his opportunity on senior night.
One of two Patriots seniors along with Luke Hill, Jacobs got the start Friday against Casey County and hit two early 3-pointers to help spark the Patriots to a 74-27 victory.
“I was really pumped. Timmy Taylor was making great passes to get me the ball and our team was working real hard,” Jacobs said. “I was ready, I’d been hitting 3s in practice and I’d just been feeling them.”
Jacob Conway had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Taylor added 16 points and six assists for Lincoln, which shot 63 percent in the first half to build a 49-15 halftime lead and help snap a two-game losing streak.
And it was effort Lincoln coach Jeff Jackson was looking for he didn’t see as the Patriots were losing their last two to Danville and Lexington Catholic.
“Effort, just play hard for 32 minutes. We had focus and intensity for 32 minutes circled on the board. That’s what we were after,” Jackson said. “We moved the ball we dove on the floor, we were aggressive defensively. And I thought we moved the ball well. When we get in a rhythm we can shoot the ball well.
“And we had several assists (19) and that’s a sign you’re sharing the ball and looking for the open guy and making the extra pass.”
It’s the kind of effort Jackson hopes carries over into next week’s 45th District Tournament where the Patriots face Danville in the semifinals Wednesday at Boyle County.
“We wanted to have a good game tonight to build on and try to get headed into next week where we can get a win, get confidence built up and play well. and I thought we did play well tonight and I hope it carries over,” he said.
Tied 2-2, Jacobs hit back-to-back 3s which started the decisive 24-0 run and helped Lincoln to a 26-3 lead after the first eight minutes.
Casey coach Darry Burkett was disappointed his short-handed team did not fight better. Casey was missing guards Skyler Wright (concussion) and Matt Bianconi (illness), so the Rebels started four forwards and a guard.
“And coach Jackson is an excellent coach and he came and double teamed us and quickened the tempo and we didn’t have the tools to deal with that,” he said. “Things started downhill and the kids got their heads down and that’s what I’m disappointed about. You keep fighting regardless of the situation.
“We don’t handle physical play very well, and Lincoln was very physical.”
It was that physical play which allowed Lincoln to scored 15 points in the first half off 13 Casey turnovers.
“We pressed a little more tonight than what we usually do, and I thought we moved out of it well and got some good traps and good deflections, back-tipped a couple of times and shot the gaps a coupe of times,” Jackson said. “It was a team effort, everybody did a good job tonight.”
Conway scored the first four points of the second quarter, then Taylor had two straight steals and layups to push the Lincoln lead to 34-7. Up 43-15, Neil Conley closed out the quarter with two straight 3-pointers to make it a 34-point lead at the half.
Conway, who had five offensive rebounds, scored on a putback in the first minute of the third quarter to make it a 51-15 game and start the running clock.
Lincoln finished 29 of 54 from the floor, including a 10 of 26 effort from 3-point range, and went 6-for-14 from the free throw line.
Baylen Hill led Casey with 12 points. The Rebels were 8 of 35 overall and 9 of 16 from the line with 18 turnovers. Burkett said his team has to put this game behind and get ready for next week’s 47th District Tournament.
“Last time we played like this was against Danville (a 61-25 loss) and we came out played our two best games of the against Cumberland County and McCreary Central,” Burkett said. “So I know the kids are resilient.”
