Prep Basketball: Mercer girls defeat Wayne in home finale; LIGHT boys win

Cassidy Martin scored 26 points Tuesday night to lead the Mercer County girls to a 66-57 victory over Wayne County in the Titans’ final home game of the season at Harrodsburg.

Mercer (21-8), playing its fourth game in five days, pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Wayne 23-13 to take a 41-27 halftime lead and keeping the Cardinals at bay in the second half.

“We didn’t play particularly well ... but I think we’re a little gassed,” Mercer coach Chris Souder said. “We’ll take the win ... and we’ll use tomorrow to rest up a little bit and try to get our legs back and be ready to go again Thursday at Southwestern.”

Catheryne Claunch scored 13 points and Heidi Huffman added 11 for Mercer, which shot just 33 percent (20 for 60) from the field and was 8 for 36 from 3-point range. The Titans hit 18 of 25 free throws.

Martin had eight rebounds, Huffman had seven rebounds, Madaline Bartley had four assists and Catheryne Claunch had four steals for the Titans.

Jamie Roberts led Wayne (15-13) with 17 points.

Western Hills 53, Boyle County 52 — At Danville, Boyle (13-12) fell in its final regular-season home game after Stephine Sparkman hit two free throws with 2.9 seconds to play to put Western Hills (10-17) on top.

The Rebels held a one-point lead before committing the foul, having rallied to go in front in the fourth quarter after falling behind in the first half.

All five Boyle starters drew two fouls each in the first half, and Boyle was outscored 16-5 in the second quarter as Western Hills took a 26-22 halftime lead.

“We never could get into our press,” Boyle assistant coach Chad Mayes said. “We had the starters sitting on the bench, and we just never could get into a flow.”

The Wolverines went 19 for 33 at the free-throw line; the Rebels were 6 for 15.

Marlee Smith led Boyle with 16 points.

Sparkman scored 15 for Western Hills, which won for the second time in 11 games.

Bourbon County 75, Burgin 56 — At Burgin, Burgin (13-12) fell to Bourbon (10-20) in its final home game.

Boys

Model 62, Danville 53 — At Danville, Danville (10-14) fell behind in the first half and couldn’t catch Model (21-6) in the Admirals’ final home game.

The Admirals were held to nine points in each of the first two quarters and trailed 31-18 at halftime.

“Danville just didn’t come out and play their best basketball,” Danville assistant coach Jeremy Vaught said. “It was an emotional night for the seniors, who all started the game, and they came in and played well, but overall it was just a sluggish performance. We battled in the second half much better and had a couple chances to cut into the lead; we just never could turn the corner.”

Jawan Grey scored 14 points for Danville, followed by Damir Karapandzic with 13 and Alex Burnside with 12.

Jon Ballard scored 26 points for Model.

LIGHT 75, CCHE 63 — At Somerset, Cameron Owens scored 34 points to lead LIGHT (17-12) over Cumberland Christian Home Educators.

Owens went 12 for 19 from the field and 7 for 8 at the free-throw line for LIGHT, which won after CCHE rallied to take a 60-59 lead with 4 minutes left.

The Eagles outscored CCHE 15-3 the rest of the way to secure the win.

“I called timeout and calmed my team down. We were so soft with defense and standing around on offense too much,” LIGHT coach Kevin Hamilton said.

Macklin Hamilton had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Stephen Chirigoti had nine rebounds for the Eagles.
