Maybe they won’t be on the Olympic team, but former University of Kentucky standouts John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins will have a chance to play a role in helping the United States win the gold medal.
The former Wildcats were two of the players named Monday to the USA select team that will train against the USA national team July 6-12 in Las Vegas. That national team will include Anthony Davis, the most outstanding player in the Final Four when he helped UK¿win the national title.
Cousins just completed his second season in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings where he averaged a double-double with 18.1 points per game (second best on the team) and team-leading 11.0 rebounds per game. He led the NBA in offensive rebounds (265) and offensive rebounds per game (4.1) in the regular season and was fourth overall in rebounding. He recorded 36 double-doubles, sixth most in the league.
Wall completed his second season with the Washington Wizards where he averaged team highs in points (16.3) and assists (8.0), while adding 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He finished seventh in the league in assists per game and led Washington in total points (1,076), assists (530), steals (95), minutes played (2,386), field goals made (378) and free-throws made (317).

Congratulations to Boyle County’s Scott Bottoms for being named the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Outstanding Official of the Year.
Bottoms regularly calls 12th Region games and annually ranks as not only one of the region’s best officials, but one of the best in the state. Even the UK¿basketball team often uses him for preseason events/scrimmages.
Bottoms has worked the state tournament and won other awards, but this one solidifies his role as the state’s best and is a huge honor.

Former Boyle baseball player Blake Perry, a 2010 sixth-round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is starting to make his mark professionally.
He was nominated for the Diamondbacks Player of the Month in April based on his performance in extended spring training before being called up to low A South Bend (Ind.) last week. Perry, 20, came out of the bullpen to throw three perfect innings with four strikeouts in a South Bend loss.
He’ll stay with the team now and certainly should get plenty more opportunities to throw based on his professional debut of three hitless innings while facing several highly regarded Cleveland Indians prospects.
Perry had signed with UK¿before accepting Arizona’s offer last summer to turn professional.
