Sophomores at East Jessamine High School met sophomores from Madison Central High School for the first time face-to-face Tuesday, though the teenagers had been working together for months on the presentations they were about to give.
Madison Central teacher Susan Cintra got a grant for iPads in her classroom and teamed with Tasha Bowlin’s students in East’s innovative Project 225. The students presented a history of their schools through Skype last semester and then picked pre-AP accelerated literature to make presentations.
Students planned their presentations over the past two months, using multimedia products on iPads to create visually pleasing and informative displays about authors, antagonists, protagonists and plot lines.
Bowlin said a big value of the program was giving students responsibility of working with others through technology.
“On their own, they created the timeline to have the project completed,” she said. “They had little deadlines for each group, who was going to do what.”
Project 225 began with last year’s freshman class signing a graduation contract and using standards-based grading. Now sophomores, half the class was chosen to receive iPads for school work in the fall.
