East Middle students visit DC
About 100 students from East Jessamine Middle School traveled to Washington, D.C., April 25-29. Students visited historic sites and national monuments in the nation’s capital as well as Mount Vernon and Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Transy upperclassmen from Jessamine to mentor new students
Jessamine County natives Kelly Hieronymus, Carrie Burt and Cameron Lindsey have been named August Term Scholars for the 2012-13 academic year at Transylvania University.
August Term Scholars will serve as role models and mentors to first-year students while working with faculty members. August term will take place August 10-30 and will provide new students with an engaging and exciting introduction to Transylvania. During the fall semester, August Term Scholars will continue to meet weekly with a small group of students.
Hieronymus, a junior philosophy major who graduated from Lafayette High School, is the daughter of Laura and Gardner Hieronymus of Nicholasville.
Burt, a sophomore who graduated from Lexington Catholic High School is the daughter of Theresa and David Burt of Nicholasville.
Lindsey, a junior English major who graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, is the son of Melanie Fusco of Nicholasville and Gregory Lindsey of Richmond.
This year’s August Term Scholars were chosen from a pool of applicants. Requirements included a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, rising junior or senior status and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
Transylvania, founded in 1780, is the nation’s 16th-oldest institution of higher learning and is consistently ranked in national publications as one of the top liberal-arts colleges in the country.
McKechnie donates $1,200 to East Jessamine Middle backpack program
The youth-service center at East Jessamine Middle School recently received a donation of $1,200 to its backpack program from McKechnie Vehicle Components. The backpack program provides food for students during the weekend when they are not in school.
Currently, the center is receiving food from Jessamine Christian Church and God's Hands Food Pantry and serving 29 students. The gift will allow the center to serve more students through the school year and into the summer months. Lynn Lindle, coordinator of the youth-service center, said she is thankful for the concern for students from McKechnie president Linda Torakis and the rest of the company.
Kierstead named to president’s list at Mississippi College
Mississippi College, located in Clinton, Miss., has named Wilmore’s Alexis Kierstead to its president’s list for the fall semester of 2011.
To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average, based on a 4.0 system. The student must take a full course load of at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit with all academic courses impacting their grade point average.
East High drama to present ‘Bye Bye Birdie’
The drama program at East Jessamine High School will present “Bye Bye Birdie” May 18-20 in the East Jessamine Middle School café-theater.
Evening shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19; afternoon performances will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, and at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20.

Clemons recognized by state for energy efforts
John Clemons, energy manager for the Jessamine County and Woodford County school systems, was among 37 school staff honored recently for their part in a two-year project that will reduce Kentucky’s school energy costs by nearly $13 million by the end of the school year.
Clemons received a certificate of commendation from officials of Kentucky School Boards Association, the Beshear administration and education commissioner Terry Holliday on April 16 in Lexington.
The event recognized key players in SEMP (School Energy Managers Project), an initiative funded through federal stimulus funding that expires this spring. Thirty-five energy managers and two energy curriculum coordinators were hired by coalitions of school systems since 2010. SEMP has been a partnership among the districts, KSBA and the state Department of Energy Development and Independence.
Jessamine students earn scholarships through Youth Salute
Youth Salute juniors were honored at Georgetown College on Sunday, with three Jessamine County students taking home college scholarships. Cynthia Lauren Moberly received a scholarship to Midway College; Amy Gatliff and Samantha Hearn received scholarships to Asbury University.
Moberly and Hearn are juniors at East; Gatliff is a junior at West.
Scholarships from Georgetown College, Asbury, Eastern Kentucky University and Midway College were awarded to students from 55 central-Kentucky schools.
