The Jessamine County school district will reorganize its leadership after current deputy superintendent Owens Saylor leaves this summer to assume the superintendency in Daviess County.
Superintendent Lu Young presented the board of education with her proposed changes at Monday night’s work session. Saylor was announced as the superintendent in Owensboro on March 26.
The new system in Jessamine County would have three “chiefs” who would essentially be assistant superintendents, Young said, and could serve as superintendent’s designees. The district had three assistant superintendents and then two assistant superintendents before Saylor became deputy superintendent.
In Young’s plan, Saylor’s old position would morph into “chief of staff” and remain responsible for areas such as athletics, transportation, food service and health services, in addition to central-office staff. Paul Hamann’s post of chief operating officer would remain the same with the addition of finance responsibilities, and the new position of chief academic officer would go to the current director of curriculum, Kathy Fields, with a few changes.
The alterations would result in no net change to the staffing salaries, Young said. She said the only “open” position — chief of staff — would be posted soon.
“We’ll be posting it probably on Friday and looking at all the applications that come in, although I do think we’ll have some strong in-district candidates,” she said.
