What ideas do you have to increase revenue or to create revenue streams for the city of Wilmore?
I believe our current streams of revenue — property taxes, insurance fees, and payroll tax surplus — can continue to sustain us if we manage them realistically. I am always open new avenues that align with our town’s character and values.
Do you feel taking over the Crouse cemetery is a financially beneficial move for the city? If so, how will the city pay for it?
In order for us to make a wise opinion on this, I think we need to explore alternative ways to finance the maintenance and upkeep. If we take it over, I would rather be creative on our approach than just add it in to the existing operating budget.
Why should the residents of Wilmore re-elect you to city council?
As a life-long resident of Wilmore, I have always been and will always be personally invested in the well-being of our community. My mission is to bring fair, reasoned decision-making to the council.
What are the major problems facing Wilmore, and what will you do about them?
The city’s budget is our primary concern. Right now we are breaking even, and I would like to see us in a place where we are able to give our hard-working city employees a raise. I continue to believe that conservative spending is an important way for us to make those allowances, yet still keep the budget balanced. We must also continue invigorating the downtown atmosphere and economy, which can be accomplished through grant monies and enticing new businesses.
What is a strength and/or highlight of Wilmore that you want to encourage, and what do you plan to do to nurture its growth?
Wilmore is a very appealing town to call home and raise a family in. We have a rare combination of small-town charm accented with the resources of two highly regarded educational institutions. I want to strengthen partnership among the city, university, and seminary, because I think working together we can best meet the needs of our citizens and keep the appeal of Wilmore fresh.
If you could make an uncontested executive decision to change one thing in Wilmore, what would it be?
This is somewhat from left-field, but I think it would be a neat idea if we could offer free wi-fi downtown as an enticement for customers, students, and businesspeople to spend time there.
What government department (fire, police, parks & rec, or other) do you feel needs the most attention, why, and what do you propose to do to address it?
Our sanitation department deserves attention. We currently need a new garbage truck, but it would behoove us to also look into the benefits of hiring an outside service to handle trash pickup. We need to assess those two alternatives and come up with the right direction for our town.
What would you like to see done with the former “Crouse” building recently purchased by the city?
I think the building needs to be razed and kept as downtown green space, with the potential for future improvements or building.
