The Bluegrass Arts Association is hoping fireworks will put a spark into its fundraising efforts this summer.
The nonprofit community organization is partnering with radio station WLXX and TNT Fireworks to sell fireworks in Nicholasville as its main fundraiser for the year.
The store, BGA Fireworks, is set up at 2150 Lexington Road. It began selling fireworks June 11 with an afternoon of live music, radio spots and food. The store will be open until July 4.
“It’s been a really great experience so far, and the response from the community has been really good so far, too,” said Teg Evans, director of the arts association. “We’ve had a lot of people in, and they’ve set us up so we’ve got really good prices.”
The arts association began in Jessamine County in 2003 and aims to provide low-cost music and art classes for area residents as well as music instruments for beginners. The association also organizes and produces the free concert series at Rock Fence Park as well as community productions.
WLXX — 92.9 the Bear — is sponsoring a giveaway in which the winner will get 92.9 seconds of free shopping at the fireworks store July 2. Registration is available at the store and online at www.bluegrassarts.org.
The arts association had operated the Main Street Playhouse in downtown Nicholasville for more than a year and a half before it closed last June. Evans said he hoped this year’s fundraiser would be a good boost for the association.
“We’re hoping this will really kind of give us a kick in the pants after closing the theater and kind of get us back on track again,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of cool stuff we want to do.”
