Despite divided results between the 2nd and 6th congressional districts, Jessamine County has chosen to re-elect Democratic incumbent Bob Damron as its state representative.
“It was a hard fought race, and mostly it was a struggle because of who was at the top of the ticket — the Obama factor made it very difficult,” Damron said Tuesday night at his celebration party. “There was a lot of people who voted straight party lines, who might have otherwise voted for me. But you won’t see an Obama shirt in this house.”
In the 2nd district, which cuts down Harrodsburg Road/Lexington Avenue and accounts for Wilmore, Damron fell behind Republican challenger Matt Lockett.
Damron only got 41.69 percent, or 2,512 votes, in the 2nd district while Lockett received a heavy 58.31 percent of the votes, or 3,513.
These are the unofficial numbers released by the election staff at the Jessamine County Clerk’s office Tuesday night.
The loss in the 2nd district was a big surprise, Wilmore City councilman Jeff Baier said after the results.
In the 6th district, which encompasses most of Jessamine County, Damron fared much better and won the overall seat.
Damron received 56.43 percent of the vote, or 8,014, while Lockett secured 43.57 percent, or 6,187.
In the end this gave Damron a total of 10,526 votes over Lockett who received 9,700.
As a 20-year veteran Damron said his win was a good one for the county as a whole, and for Nicholasville and Wilmore because he said had Lockett won, that he would be in favor of redistricting that not only split the county but also split the cities in to halves.
Damron said he is completely opposed to that because no matter how the county is redistricted, he want to ensure there is always someone from Jessamine County in office.
“It’s going to be the Bob and Tom show (Republican Sen. Tom Buford) again back in Frankfort,” Damron said. “We work really well to together — with me in the House and him in the Senate.
“Also, I’m just very grateful to the voters who put their trust in me again and I’m looking to getting back to work.”
Lockett could not be reached for comment.
