Nearly two dozen Jessamine County Christians gathered at the courthouse steps Thursday, May 3, at noon to join in the annual National Day of Prayer.
The goal of the NDP is the “Judeo-Christian expression ... to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness,” according to chairman Dr. David Jeremiah.
The Jessamine County event was led by Dwight Winter, senior associate pastor of Wilmore Free Methodist Church, who guided participants in segmented three-minute prayer clusters that covered everything from local government to the servicemen and servicewomen overseas.
Winter is also president of the Jessamine County Ministerial Association, which coordinated the event.
Community and religious leaders including former Nicholasville Mayor John Martin and activist Perry Barnes were all present with heads held low.
Assisting Winter was ministerial-association treasurer Roland Bowman, who was there with his wife, Ruth, and several grandchildren.
“This is a positive event,” Ruth Bowman said. “It’s important for our children and our government.”
Beyond the government, Winter led those gathered in prayer for integrity in the media and business, wisdom for educators in the school system, the family unit, and local and worldwide disaster victims.
“In light of the unprecedented challenges the United States faces at this critical juncture, I’m especially encouraged to know that so many are raising their voices in repentance, praise and intercession,” Shirley Dobson, chairman of NDP Task Force, said. “The theme for this year’s National Day of Prayer is ‘One Nation Under God’ and is based on Psalm 33:12, which reminds individuals ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.’”
