The eighth annual High Bridge Homecoming Festival is laying out the welcoming mat Friday afternoon and opening its small community doors to the world.
“We call it a ‘homecoming,’ but want we want is really for everyone, whether you’re from there or not, to feel like you are at home in the High Bridge area,” said Judy Woolums, chair of the committee overseeing the festival. “(High Bridge) has some really unique areas, and people come from all around every year to see how beautiful it is.”
The festival runs from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday at the High Bridge Park near Wilmore and is an outgrowth of the High Bridge Community Association run by its president, Lewis Travis. The goal of the festival is to highlight the aspects of the High Bridge area and celebrate what makes it unique to central Kentucky, Woolums said.
Those areas include the bridge once known as the the highest bridge over a navigable river, plus the Dix River, flows in the Kentucky River, and the “magnificent palisades,” which have been undamaged by progress, she said. Dix River Tours will also be running tours of the river the festival.
Woolums continued to say that not only is the river worth seeing but the park is home to trees more than a century old.
The weekend event offers more than just nature and includes a ton of family fun fare such as live music, a corn-hole tournament, art in the park, silent auctions, inflatables for children and also free watermelon slices provided by Fitch’s IGA.
Volunteers from the Jessamine County Animal Shelter will also have trailers set up with adoptable animals in the parking lot from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Many of the activities at the festival are free, while others, such as food and souvenirs, will be offered at cost. Live music starts at noon on Saturday and there will be a church service on Sunday with more live music afterwards by local bands until the close Sunday afternoon.
There will also be two fund-raising raffles. The first is the “Farmer’s Wife” Quilt with over 3,184 pieces, beautifully crafted and donated by the mother-daughter team of Flo Walker and Mildred Smith. Tickets are $2 each. The second raffle is a 22HP Cub Cadet Professional Grade 46-inch cut lawn tractor with a 5-foot-by-8-foot mesh floor trailer and jack.

Parking is free and available at Slagel Farm, High Bridge Fire House and High Bridge Union Church (Friday and Saturday only). There is also limited handicap parking with a shuttle service.
