If Jessamine County Clerk Eva McDaniel’s forecast proves true, some 20,800 of the county’s 33,623 registered voters will cast a ballot on Election Day.
“I’m expecting between 58 and 62 percent Tuesday,” McDaniel said. “People get out and vote during a presidential election, but they won’t get out during regular elections.”
McDaniel said through Tuesday afternoon, her office had received more than 1,000 absentee ballots, and she expects election day to be a busy one for her staff.
The county clerk’s projections are on par with state projections, according to a news release from Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.
Grimes is predicting anywhere from 62 and 64 percent voter turnout, which would be a record, according to the news release.
“Voters have many important decisions to make on Election Day,” Grimes said. “I urge all eligible Kentuckians to be a part of the process and make their voices heard.”
Grimes said that to date, absentee voting activity is on par with the 2008 general election. With approximately 130,000 more registered voters compared with 2008, Grimes predicts a record number of ballots will be cast in the Nov. 6 election.
Grimes’ prediction hinges on the impact superstorm Sandy may have on Kentucky, the full extent of which is not yet known.
“I am working closely with our county clerks to monitor the effects of Sandy on our election and to ensure that all Kentuckians’ right to vote on Nov. 6 is preserved,” Grimes said.
