They all get the calls.
Maybe it’s a neighbor’s cats who keep getting in someone’s yard. Maybe it’s a colony of feral cats that has taken up residence by someone’s house. Jessamine County Animal Care and Control, the Trap/Neuter Program and Jessamine Humane hear about these cases all the time.
And there isn’t a lot they can do.
There are no leash laws concerning cats in the county, said Mike Cassidy, director of public services for Jessamine County. Cassidy oversees animal care and control.
“The only leash laws involve dogs,” he said.
Also, the agency will not pick up cats unless they are injured, he said.
If it is a feral colony, the trap-neuter program will spay and neuter the cats, but they will be returned to the same place.
Enacting any kind of ordinance would require action from the city and county governments, Cassidy said. But he believes ordinances wouldn’t help much.
“It think they would be impossible to enforce,” he said.
Cunningham agrees that ordinances won’t solve the problem.
Controlling the population is the best thing to do, and help from the city and county in doing so would do much more than new laws, she said.
“We would like to see officials get with local vets and pay for a round-up (of cats to be spayed and neutered),” she said.
