Nicholasville Elementary School music teacher Matt Sanders had his day get a little better Tuesday when principal Karen McGuire walked into his class and told him he had won $1,000 in teaching supplies through OfficeMax’s “A Day Made Better” contest.

Each OfficeMax store delivers an award to a school; Sanders’ prize came from the Lexington store on Reynolds Road.

McGuire nominated Sanders for the award, which aims to help end the need for teachers to fund their own classrooms with supplies.

“He’s always looking for ways to delight the children with music, and he has had such a profound effect on them as the value of music in their lives and bringing out their talents in that area,” McGuire said.

Sanders is in his second year teaching at the school.

“It’s a real honor to teach here and get to do this every day,” he said. “I love getting to teach kids music. It’s not a matter of having to come to school; it’s getting to come to school and working with these kids.”
