An accident Wednesday afternoon resulted in a semitrailer practically wrapping around a traffic light pole and spilling about 100 gallons of diesel fuel, and sent the driver of the truck to the hospital with minor injuries.
The accident happened just after 2 p.m., when the driver applied his brakes as the light at Brannon Crossing and U.S. 27 turned red as he was heading toward Lexington, said Nicholasville police officer Kevin Grimes.
The fuel spill caused officers close one northbound lane of U.S. 27 for safety reasons, Grimes said. Pecco of Nicholasville was called in to clean up the fuel.
The accident also caused the traffic light to sag. A Winchester company is coming in to repair that light, Grimes said. The truck cannot be moved until that is repaired, and that could take a while.
“We’re looking at a minimum of a couple of hours (total),” Grimes said. “We’re not sure if the (traffic light) pole is stable; we might have to replace that.”
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Firefighters were called about the same time to an unrelated incident just across the street from the accident, Grimes said. A truck had caught fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly and no one was hurt in that incident, he said.
