Melissa Kaye Haynes, 47, formerly of Lexington, died Monday, April 23, in her home in Cincinnati. She was a speech therapist in the Cincinnati area for 20 years. Melissa received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech pathology at Western Kentucky University.
She was the daughter of Bob N. Haynes Jr. and the late Pauline Charles Haynes of Lexington.
Melissa was a trumpet player in the Lafayette High School band. An avid musician, she also played both violin and fiddle music, the clarinet and the piano. She also enjoyed playing in women’s softball leagues. In her pre-college days, Melissa was in a special group of friends who worked at Hall’s on Main in Lexington.
An amateur chef, Melissa was a partner in a Celina, Ohio, restaurant for a short time before returning to her speech-therapy career. She donated her time on many Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to prepare and serve food to patients in rehab and nursing homes.
Besides her father, she is survived by two brothers, Dr. Joel Haynes and wife Gail of Bozeman, Mont., and Mark Haynes of Las Vegas; and her stepmother, Betty H. Haynes of Lexington.
She was predeceased by her grandparents, Julian and Octavia Charles of Phelps, and Robert Newton and Danford Haynes of Southgate, Mich.; and a sister-in-law, Eden Haynes, of Las Vegas.
Melissa had an army of friends who gave her support and end-of-life care. They include her partner, Sandra Stratton; and close friends Heidi, Nazanin and Shalini.
Gwen Mooney Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Respecting Melissa’s wishes, there will be no public service after her cremation. Her family will be grateful for written remembrances of Melissa. Memorial contributions can be sent to Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati, 2715 Redding Road, Cincinnati, OH 45206.
