It’s no secret that grass and mulch fires tend to crop up during the dry summer months, but in light of this year’s extremely dry and hot stretch, this newspaper gives a hearty thumbs down to those people who carelessly toss smoking materials out from vehicles or simply toss a partially extinguished cigarette on the ground, thus igniting a grass fire.
While Jessamine County as a whole is fortunate to have outstanding and professional fire departments staffed with capable firefighters, one must remember that each time they head out to a fire call, they are placing themselves in harm’s way. So, instead of tossing your smoke out the window or tossing it onto the ground, put it in your vehicle ashtray or discard of it properly and make sure it is no longer burning.

Youth Leadership Jessamine County, a program offered to high-school juniors, shows how much the community cares about Jessamine County’s children and the future of our community.
The program, which will launch in January 2013, will be patterned after Leadership Jessamine County and will be modeled in the same way by instilling and expressing the same values and skills but geared toward juniors in high school.

On Saturday, The Nicholasville water department issued a voluntary water-conservation advisory. The reason is obvious: It’s hot and dry outside.
While the move is a good one, it is disheartening to see many Jessamine Countians watering their lawns and washing their cars in the middle of the day.
Yes, the measure is voluntary only. But common sense would dictate that the watering of lawns and washing of cars in the heat of the day could easily be put off until the early-morning or late evening hours. Be smart when using water during this hot and dry time. Water evaporates more quickly in the middle of the day than it does during the morning or evening.

Nationally, the Fourth of July means fireworks, hot dogs and fun. Locally, it means the return of an annual Wilmore event: The Festival of the Fourth.
This year marked the 24th such event, and each year it proves more and more popular.
Much credit goes to Wilmore’s parks and recreation staff and to city leaders who have supported this event for years. If you’ve enjoyed a 25-cent hot dog, make sure to thank the public-works folks who hovered over a hot grill on an even hotter day.
