East Jessamine senior Timmy Bradshaw and sophomore Ronnie Carson combined for 52 points in the Jaguars’ 73-51 blowout of South Laurel Friday afternoon at the People’s Bank Classic at Madison Southern.
The 1:30 p.m. start time had East on the court six hours earlier than usual — and it showed during the first half.
East came out a bit sluggish and lackadaisical, battling the Cardinals in the 15-14 first quarter.
“We talked about how we needed to play with energy from the moment that ball goes up,” East Jessamine coach Chris O’Bryan said. “It looked like we played the earlier game instead of them. We weren’t going hard; we weren’t talking to each other; we didn’t play as a team.”
Carson was on the attack early, scoring six points in the first period. Bradshaw drained a three-pointer to give East a 13-9 lead with 2:01 remaining.
Bradshaw and South Laurel traded threes to open the second quarter, and the Cards continued to leave the sharpshooter open.
Hayden Smith hit a three of his own and Carson added five more points to give East a 30-24 lead at the break.
The rest of the Jaguars came on strong in the second half as East stretched its lead out to 12 points.
Bradshaw knocked down two more open looks from beyond the arc in the third.
“Some of the kids had a great second half compared to the first, and that’s what I want to see,” O’Bryan said. “I want to see kids that can fight through adversity, come back and play the next quarter and get something positive out of it. I thought from top down they all did that.”
In the fourth quarter, Carson and Bradshaw were just about scoring at will. They scored 18 of the team’s 23 points in the final eight minutes to finish off the night. Carson scored a team-high 27 and Bradshaw dropped 25.
