Great performances on the football field or basketball court can last two to three hours. Abby Wiggins’ performance lasted just 15.26 seconds, but that doesn’t keep it from being the best by a West Jessamine athlete this past season.
Wiggins’ shining moment came in 100-meter hurdles at the track and field state championships in Louisville.
The West Jessamine junior was neck-and-neck with North Oldham’s Brianne Brown heading toward the final hurdle. Brown clipped the hurdle, sending her to the ground; Wiggins avoided getting rolled up and went on to victory.
Last year at state, another runner spilled into Wiggins’ lane on the last hurdle, causing her to fall and lose time in the 300-meter hurdles.
“Well first I had a flashback to last year ... and then I got past it. I didn’t really think about it then, but after I crossed the line I was like, ‘OK, I just won this,’” Wiggins said. “It’s crazy ... I was going to be happy with second, because going in, (Brown’s) time was half a second faster than mine, and I knew it was going to take something crazy for me to pull it out in the end.”
Wiggins followed her first-place finish with a second place in the 300-meter hurdles.
