West Jessamine senior Joseph Durbin is the latest Colt athlete to make his college selection. The track and cross-country runner will head to Centre College in the fall.
“I really liked the personal education (that Centre can offer). I’m really going to like having help with all my professors,” Durbin said. “They’re also highly competitive in track and at the top of their conference every year.”
Durbin had a strong junior season in the track, going to the state championships in two events.
He was the first leg in the boys’ 4x800-meter relay, which turned in a time of 8 minutes, 41.41 seconds — 14th best in the state.
Durbin also competed in the 800-meter run, where he placed 15th with a time of 2:05.99.
“I think probably his best attribute is his determination to work hard,” West track coach Aaron Ames said. “There might be a few people that will have a little more speed or some more natural endurance, but I think his edge will be that no one is going to out work him.”
Durbin said Ames was a huge factor in helping him progress as a runner the last few years and helping him lower his times.
Durbin also played soccer at West.
He is considering studying business at Centre.
