The West Jessamine High School boys' golfers brought home the goods Saturday as the team took the state championship and junior Fred Allen Meyer won the individual title in a playoff in Bowling Green.
West came back from 12 strokes down after the first day, carding an even-par 288 as a team and finishing at 17-over-par for the tournament, two strokes in front of St. Xavier and 28 strokes in front of third place St. Mary. Each of West's five golfers finished in the top 24. West had finished two years in a row as the top public school in the state but had not been able to top St. Xavier and other private schools until this year.
Meyer made his own comeback Saturday, carding a 2-under 70 to win the individual championship with a two-day total of 141, 3 strokes below par. Meyer finished regulation in a tie for first with St. Mary senior Joey Mayo and defeated Mayo in the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Meyer had finished in fifth at the state championships as a freshman and in second last year as a sophomore.
Sophomore Connor Haas finished in a tie for ninth overall as an individual at 7-over-par for the tournament. Senior Travis Rose tied for 12th at 8-over; junior Byron Speach tied for 17th at 10-over; and junior Austin Swentzel tied for 21st at 11-over.
