STANFORD — The Harrodsburg man who was wounded after shooting at a Stanford police officer outside Walmart has been released from custody after being discharged from the hospital and posting bond.
Jackie Murphy, who is charged with the attempted murder of officer Tim Morris, posted a $200,000 property bond Friday, the day he was released from the medical facility at the Kentucky State Reformatory at LaGrange, said Lisa Lamb, spokeswoman for the Corrections Cabinet.
Murphy, 71, had been treated at the state facility since the Aug. 20 shooting, when he was shot four times below the waist by Morris after allegedly opening fire on the officer in the Walmart parking lot.
Murphy’s attorney, David Marshall of Nicholasville, entered a “not guilty” plea on his client’s behalf during an arraignment last week in Lincoln District Court.
A preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday was postponed until Oct. 22 after Marshall requested that Murphy undergo a mental competency evaluation. Lincoln District Judge Janet Booth has not yet ruled on the request, Marshall said Tuesday.
According to police, Murphy was confronted inside Walmart by store security after he appeared to be shoplifting some sandpaper. Murphy fled the store and then opened fire on Morris, who had just arrived in response to the shoplifting call, police said.
According to friends in Harrodsburg, Murphy had served in combat during the Vietnam War and had appeared to be under increased stress in the days leading up to the shooting incident.
