CRAB ORCHARD — Authorities are investigating the death of a Garrard County man whose body was discovered inside his home Thursday night after family members had not heard from him in several days.
An autopsy is scheduled today for Ormand VanWinkle, 64, who lived alone on Drakes Creek near the Lincoln County line.
VanWinkle was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m. by Garrard County Coroner Daryl Hodge after a welfare check was requested by family members who had not seen or spoken to VanWinkle in several days.
Authorities are waiting on preliminary autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
State Trooper Paul Blanton said this morning that the initial investigation does not suggest foul play, “at least on the surface.”
“It’s probably going to be natural causes,” Blanton said. “It looked like he’d been dead for maybe two days.”
Hodge declined to speculate on the cause of death until after the autopsy.
“We don’t know anything at this point,” Hodge said this morning. “We called an investigator in because we were baffled by what we found as to what caused this man’s death.”
State police Detective Jeremy Hamm is attending the autopsy today at the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort. Hodge said he expects to learn preliminary results later today and will announce the findings.
