STANFORD — A toddler is safe at home after being found wandering outside alone Thursday morning wearing only a diaper and T-shirt at a Stanford apartment complex.
About 10 a.m., Stanford police responded to Lincoln Terrace Apartments after a maintenance worker reported finding a child at the apartment complex’s playground.
The temperature was about 25 degrees.
Sgt. T.J. Hill said the 2-year-old boy woke up early and “managed to get out while the mother was still sleeping with another child.”
Despite a gate blocking the door and a child-proof door knob, the child wandered outside to the playground about 50 yards from the apartment, Hill said.
Hill said he and police had the child at the apartment complex’s office when he went to ask Kayla Martin if she had any children missing.
“She said they were sleeping, then went to check,” Hill said. “She freaked out.”
Hill said the toddler was not harmed or crying and didn’t appear to have suffered any harm.
“He seemed to be enjoying the adventure,” Hill said.
Officers reunited Martin with her son, and Hill said she was “torn up” and the boy just wanted to be held by his mom.
Social services came to Martin’s home to investigate but agreed with police that no negligence had occurred, just a scary accident.
Social workers advised Martin how to avoid a future problem of the boy wandering out alone.
Hill said Martin did not receive any charges.
“She’s just a young, single mom with a couple of kids,” he said.
