JUNCTION CITY — Extremely dry conditions and a prevailing wind increased concern along with leaping flames and thick smoke Tuesday on a wooded knob just inside Lincoln County south of Danville.
The fire, which was still burning this morning, is being managed by the U.S. Forestry Service, which dug a trench around the perimeter of the blaze, according to firefighters on the scene.
The fire was said to still be burning inside the lines today.
Lincoln County firefighter Billy Miller said the fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on the steep hill between U.S. 127 at Bowen Road and the Boyle County Fish and Game Club on Phillips Lane in Junction City.
Firefighters kept a close eye on area homes in case the blaze, described as “pretty dang big” by one of the firefighters, got out of hand.
Firefighter Jimmy Gipson was staged on the other side of the knob at the gun club with the caretakers of the facility, Bud and Ronda Davis.
Ronda Davis was concerned for her home located just on the other side of the gravel parking lot of the facility.
“I would say the fire is four acres, five tops,” Gipson said. He did not believe the fire was likely to advance.
The density of the forested knob, according to Gipson, might keep the fire contained and starved for airflow.
The knob lies beyond the gun range at the fish and game club.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
“We will likely never know,” Gipson said.
