HALLS GAP — Lincoln County has chosen one of its own as the new principal for Highland Elementary.
Lifetime Lincoln resident James Carrier was selected by the Highland Elementary school council Monday night to fill the position a little more than a month after the former principal Darren Yaden took a technology coordinator position at the district office.
"I am very pleased and honored to be selected," Carrier said. "Together with the Highland community, we will continue to make our school the best that it can be."
Superintendent Karen Hatter said the school council made a good choice in Carrier, who has worked in the Lincoln County School District his entire career.
"I am confident that Mr. Carrier possesses the skills and vision to move Highland Elementary School forward and continue their tradition of academic excellence," Hatter said.
Carrier has a bachelor's in elementary education from Berea College, as well as a pair of master's in education and instructional leadership from Eastern Kentucky University.
Carrier has worked at McKinney Elementary since 2004, most recently serving as an academic performance specialist. Prior to McKinney, he was a teacher at Waynesburg Elementary.
In 2009 while at McKinney, Carrier was a finalist for Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year.
"There was a deep pool of highly qualified candidates that applied for this position," Hatter said. "The committee selected the individual that possesses the skill and ability to lead Highland Elementary into the future. I am confident that we selected the right person."
Carrier begins his new job Jan. 2.
