STANFORD — A highly visible business along U.S. 27 has closed its Stanford doors after decades in Lincoln County.
The local Clayton Mobile Homes branch, with its prominent blue sign on a hill just north of the intersection of U.S. 27 and U.S. 150, closed for business earlier this month.
Billboards on display at the location now say the business has relocated to Somerset, where a Clayton Mobile Homes branch already exists.
No one who worked at the local business was available for comment. Repeated calls to Clayton's corporate headquarters in Maryville, Tenn., were not returned.
Lincoln County Economic Development Executive Director Matt Belcher said there was no public announcement made by Clayton beyond the signs outside the business and he has not heard from the company.
Belcher estimated the local Clayton branch directly employed no more than half a dozen employees, but couldn't provide an exact number because the company has not responded to calls.
