STANFORD — Construction may still be years away, but Lincoln and Garrard counties are planning ahead for the widening of U.S. 27 from north Garrard County to Stanford.
Lincoln County Fiscal Court approved Tuesday a memorandum of agreement with Garrard County and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet setting up a plan for the new U.S. 27 to dissect Logan-Hubble Park on the Lincoln/Garrard county line.
The proposed route will travel across about 23 acres of what is now an "underutilized" part of the 329-acre park, according to the memorandum. About 25 acres of the park will be separated from the majority of the land by the road.
The route will "greatly improve access to and visibility of" Logan-Hubble Park, according to the memorandum. The document also states that KYTC will provide each county with up to $10,000 to construct a sign welcoming drivers to the park.
Lincoln County Attorney Daryl Day said when the state buys up the 23 acres needed for construction, money from that purchase will likely have to go into a special fund designated for improving and maintaining the park.
Such a result could be the solution for accomplishing park improvements that neither county could afford previously, he said.
"We've got a lot of land out there, we've just not had the funds between the two counties to do what should be done," he said.
In other fiscal court news, magistrates approved a $19,075 payment to Kevin Hopkins Concrete for completion of a project to upgrade eight wood-topped county bridges.
Judge-Executive Jim Adams said the project, which was funded by $80,000 in state grant money, came in under-budget by about $10,000.
The remaining funds will be used to fix another bridge on Miracle Jerky Road, Adams said.
