Stanford boy injured during church hay ride

STANFORD — A church hayride accident seriously injured an 8-year-old Stanford boy Sunday, but few details are known and officials have not yet released any information about the incident.

Jalen Smith was injured Sunday evening during a church hayride at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

According to a WKYT report, the boy suffered a serious leg injury in the accident and was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

A spokeswoman said Tuesday that Jalen was listed in serious condition.

“The first call we had received was that a hayride turned over and there were multiple children involved,” Stanford Emergency Medical Services Director Ashley Powell told WKYT. “Upon our crew’s arrival, we realized that it actually didn’t turn over, it had collided with a fence post at a gate.”

Powell believes Jalen became trapped between the wagon and the fence, severely injuring his leg.

Powell was at a conference Tuesday and no other EMS official was authorized to speak about the accident.

No information about the accident has been released by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Curt Folger was out of town and unavailable for comment.
