Basketball: Lincoln boys lose by 16 to Wayne County

BJ Hoover scored a game-high 22 points for Lincoln against Wayne County last Tuesday, but it wouldn’t be enough as the visiting Cardinals cruised 78-62 over the Patriots.

Timmy Taylor also hit double figures for Lincoln, however, Wayne topped Lincoln’s scoring effort by placing four players in double digits.

Wayne (3-1) was led by Peyton Woods with 20 points. Corey Stearns added 16 points, Jason Perkins finished with 13 points and Trey Blevins had 11.

The Cardinals jumped on their hosts 18-13 in the first quarter and spent the rest of the game building on their lead.

Wayne went into the half up 37-28 then used a 16-9 run in the third quarter to make it 53-37. 

Lincoln (1-2) improved on its scoring in the final period, knocking down 25 points, but Wayne also hit 25 to guarantee the 16-point victory.

The Cardinals shot 53 percent for the game, going 25-for-47 from the field. They were at 77 percent at the free throw line on 23-for-30 shooting.

The Patriots finished at 47 percent overall, going 27-for-58 from the field. At the line Lincoln was just 4-for-9.

Wayne won on the glass as well, outrebounding Lincoln 32-26. Stearns led Wayne with nine rebounds while Woods and Shelton each had seven. Taylor was Lincoln’s rebounding leader with six boards. Luke Hill finished with five and Andrew Wilks had four.

Lincoln had eight turnovers to Waynes’ five.
