Centre College administration should receive every consideration in discussions over its Fifth Street renovation proposal. When questions are answered and any issues resolved, approval should be granted.
Centre’s leadership and responsible history affirm its record for performance in our community’s interests. Further, it is the college’s intent to enhance an area recognized to be in need of environmental and public safety changes. While it is fully appropriate that the Architectural Review Board delve into all community proposals, The Advocate-Messenger coverage — including artists’ renderings — suggest this project will have an immediate positive impact.
Exceptional examples of Centre’s commitment to Danville’s heritage and future abound. College officials have more than met the tenets of prior plans and designs. New architectural assets — fully complementary to Danville’s historic style and character — now beautify the campus. Concurrently, these structures lift the value of surrounding properties.
Centre College ranks high among our nation’s elite educational institutions. And it is truly a leading financial and cultural engine in our community and state. The college’s studied and judicious investments have employed hundreds, while adding favorably to our tax base. Consider these a community bonus in dire economic times.
From a personal point of view, my wife and I began decades ago planning for retirement. In each of our careers, we have traveled the commonwealth; in mine, the country and overseas. Passionate about Kentucky and preservation of its architectural wonders, we long ago selected Danville as we move toward our elder years. Divine Providence brought us to an historic home just outside of town.
Our good fortune has been greatly increased by the presence of Centre College. We have tasted the riches of this fine institution. Certainly, the Architectural Review Board, Danville and Boyle County officials must examine and debate Centre’s newest proposals for the region. We are confident that upon conclusion, they will find this one to be solid; a true enhancement to the rich life we now enjoy.
