3. Spirit Drummer Ed Cassidy Dies at 89

Ed Cassidy, the drummer for 60’s psychedelic rock stalwarts Spirit, died yesterday in San Jose, CA at the age of 89. No cause of death was immediately released. Cassidy had an extensive career in music long before he, his stepson Randy California, Mark Andes and Jay Ferguson formed a group called the Red Roosters in 1965, later changing their name to Spirit with the addition of keyboardist John Locke. In 1968, they released their self-titled debut and later that same year second album The Family That Plays Together, which contained their biggest hit, “I Got a Line On You.” In 1969 Spirit toured with a then-relatively-obscure band called Led Zeppelin as their opening act. Cassidy’s drum solo using his bare hands reportedly inspired John Bonham to employ the same tactic on Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick.”
