Orioles setup man Pedro Strop probably won’t get any opportunities to close games for the Dominican team during the World Baseball Classic.
“I don’t think so,’’ he said, “since we have Fernando Rodney and [Santiago] Casilla from the Giants,’’ Strop said. “It’s a pretty good bullpen.”
Might be the best in the WBC. Rodney had 48 saves for the Tampa Bay Rays last year and an otherworldly 0.60 ERA, a record for relievers. Casilla saved 25 games for the World Series champions.
Strop had a terrific year setting up Jim Johnson, so he figures to be in a similar role in the WBC.
Though the Orioles probably would rather have Strop stay in camp, Showalter is taking comfort in the fact that Orioles bullpen coach Bill Castro will be with the Dominican team to keep an eye him.
