  5. Former employee sues McKinney rescue squad

STANFORD — A fired former employee of the McKinney Area Rescue Squad has filed a lawsuit alleging that inappropriate sexual conduct by the director created a hostile work environment.Laura Ashley Wilcher of Hustonville filed the complaint May 27 in Lincoln Circuit Court naming the rescue squad and director Steve Woods as defendants. It claims that Wilcher was first demoted and then terminated after filing complaints about Woods’ alleged behavior during an EMT training conference in Lexington in September.Neither Woods nor the rescue squad’s board of directors has yet responded to the allegations made in the complaint.According to the lawsuit, Wilcher began work at the rescue squad in 2004 and worked her way up to assistant director. In September, Wilcher made arrangements to share a motel room with another female member of the rescue squad while attending the conference, the complaint maintains, but upon arrival was forced to share a room with the female and Woods.Wilcher protested the arrangement but was “exposed to unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature” between Woods and the female employee, creating a hostile work environment for Wilcher, the lawsuit states. In retaliation for her complaints, Wilcher was forced to resign her position as assistant director in November but continued to work for the rescue squad with reduced pay and responsibilities. On March 4, Wilcher informed Woods she was going to make a written complaint to the board and was suspended by Woods, the lawsuit alleges.Wilcher filed the complaint alleging a hostile work environment and retaliation with the board on March 14, and then was fired by the board 11 days later, the lawsuit maintains. The lawsuit, filed by Lexington attorney J. Dale Golden, seeks unspecified damages for Wilcher’s alleged pain, mental anguish and humiliation, plus her lost wages and impairment of her ability to earn money in the future.
