  5. Time still moves slowly on Sanibel, Captiva islands

If you're in a hurry, you don't belong on Sanibel.
If you're in a hurry, you don't belong on Sanibel. That friendly admonition has been a pearl of wisdom on this leisurely Gulf Coast island for decades. In the 1970s, when a high-school buddy and I used to take day trips across the remote Alligator...

  7. Beware those "lesser" hurricanes

    Maryland Weather
We have a natural tendency to discount the "weaker" hurricanes, those Cat. 1 and 2 cyclones that seem so run-of-the-mill compared with the Cat. 4 and 5 beasts that show up from time to time. But the smaller tempests are sometimes......

  14. Cabbage Key: An isolated travel getaway

The boat pushed away from the dock, eased past the pelican perched on a piling, and looped out into Pine Island Sound. What is it about being on water that makes you feel you're in Florida? The Lady Chadwick from Captiva was dropping off passengers, so we sidled next to one of the outer docks. A great lawn rose up to an umbrellaed patio full of families eating lunch. There was something about the scene — the manicured grounds, the running children, the low-slung building behind — that made me think of a country club.
