    Contributing Writer
Could it be that one of the reasons Kentucky’s political leaders continue to kick the commonwealth’s can of unfunded pension liabilities down the road is because they are counting on a bailout from the federal government? Why not? If...

  11. Obituaries: Kimberly Schriefer

Kimberly Diane Schriefer, 45, died Saturday, April 30, at her residence. She was born Dec. 14, 1965, in Davenport, Iowa. She received her degree in psychology from the University of Kentucky and her masters degree in clinical psychology from Morehead State University. Reproduced below is her introduction she wrote on her Facebook page: “Hello to anyone interested! After high school in Lexington, I graduated from the University of KY and Morehead State University getting an MA in Clinical Psychology. I still take classes regularly and I am a few classes away from completing the course requirements for a Ph.D. I work in private practice preferring therapy with teens but I also work with adults. I married in 2000 after a couple of years of dating my husband, Steve, and we have a good life. He has three terrific, adult daughters from his first marriage and one grandson. As I could not have children, we rescue and find homes for stray cats, own a few ourselves and enjoy owning horses. Outdoor activities still are my passion and we have 80 acres of wilderness on the outskirts of Lexington, as wild and full of wildlife as any forest, with hiking trails and horse trails. I also love spending time with my three nephews and one niece as well as my husband’s grandson. Life is full, every day is varied, and my goal is to squeeze all the living I can out of the time given me. Any spare moment finds me hiking on the land looking for and finding American Indian artifacts, kayaking, mountain biking, or trying to talk someone into being crazy enough to go rock climbing with me. I plan to get old later — much later!” She is survived by her husband, Dr. Stephen S. Draper of Lexington; mother, Carole Eades and husband Tom of Lexington; father, Boyd Schriefer of Lexington; sister, Debbie Strehl and husband Keith of Lexington; brother,  Jeff Schriefer and wife Norma of Lexington; stepdaughters Ashley Draper and Stephanie Draper-Noland of Lexington; stepdaughter Kathy Draper-May of Wilmore; stepbrother Johnny Carmichael and wife Bethany of Lexington; stepmother Cathy Schriefer of Lexington; niece Regan Strehl of Lexington; nephews Brian Strehl, Jeffrey Schriefer and Ash Carmichael of Lexington; grandson Garland May of Wilmore; brother-in-law Bill Draper and wife Debbie of Princeton, W.Va.; mother-in-law Betty Gates of Princeton, W.Va.; uncle Ron Schriefer and wife Kay of Moline, Ill.; uncle Paul Cato and wife Sue of Annapolis, Md.; uncles Larry and Garry Cato of Davenport, Iowa; uncle Dennis Cato and wife Michelle of Davenport, Iowa; aunt Joanne Gillaspie and husband Larry of Davenport, Iowa; cousins Ashley Herr, Jason and Kevin Gillaspie, Andrew, Allison and Jacob Cato of Davenport, Iowa; and cousins Michael and Jennifer Cato and Sara Cato Bailey of Annapolis, Md. A celebration of her life was held at Milward Funeral Home on Southland Drive in Lexington on Wednesday, May 4, at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lexington Humane Society, 1600 Old Frankfort Pike, Lexington, KY 40504. www.milwardfuneral.com.

  15. Right, left get along — outside Washington

I am encouraged by the surprisingly bipartisan coalitions that backed recent state victories for marijuana legalization, gay marriage and prison sentencing reform. Maybe we all can get along.

  17. Farm bill remains a misunderstood piece of legislation

We've entered that time of the year when there isn't a whole lot of excitement going on, on the farm or really anywhere in agriculture - unless you count the continued lack of a Farm Bill. There's still hope, say some, for a 2012 Farm Bill, but if you...

  21. Higher taxes, lower spending?
