1. Who are the real 'takers'?

Contributing columnist
According to the GOP, right-wing think tanks and Fox News, the U.S. is on the verge of becoming a nation of “takers” who want to be given (as Mitt Romney put it) “free stuff.” These takers are flush with a sense of “...

3. Appalled newspaper omitted LaRouche's party affiliation

Recently the website buzzfeed.com ran a story about Fox News contributor Bob Beckel's offensive comments about his lack of concern about rape on college campuses in the country. It was rightfully condemned by many on that site, but many of the site’...

5. Newtown plans burials as school's future debated

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - A grieving Connecticut town braced itself Monday to bury the first two of the 20 small victims of an elementary school gunman and debated when classes could resume — and where, given the carnage in the building and the children's associations with it.

7. Crime, politics and success topped the local headlines in 2012

In looking back over the stories published by The Advocate-Messenger in 2012, it was apparent the year started out slowly in terms of big news. But the headlines got bigger as May rolled around and stayed that way throughout the rest of the year. As with any year, there were stories to celebrate and stories that caused despair in 2012. Danville hired its first black police chief, who was quickly besieged by an uptick in violent crime, including three murders. Candidates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan and the world came to town and liked what they saw. A year of acrimonious politics at Danville city hall ended with voters choosing new faces in November. Boyle schools distinguished themselves, while Danville High said goodbye to its legendary football coach. The following 10 stories resonated the loudest in 2012.

9. Pay more attention to mental health

Adam Lanza was 20, and apparently a bright young man. He had obvious mental issues. He could’ve owned his own guns, but he didn’t need to. He used his mother’s guns. She obviously had a gun permit. Adam Lanza shot his mother then took...

15. Boyle airport a hub of activity during vice-presidential debate

Candidate motorcades stopped traffic and turned heads before last week's vice-presidential debate at Centre College, but most people were oblivious to the many aircrafts slipping into town.

17. Press pass: Small-timer gets swag, chats with celebs

tkleffman@amnews.com

19. MSNBC's Matthews, 'Hardball' provide 'true debate atmosphere'

If you weren’t VIP enough to get inside the Norton Center to watch the debate in person or credentialed enough hang out with the media and pols in Spin Alley, the only place to be Thursday night for news and political junkies was in front of the MSNBC stage watching Chris Matthews play “Hardball.”

21. MY TURN: Spin alley provides the punctuation mark for debate

Even a political junkie like me can admit there’s something counterintuitive about going to a place called “spin alley” to get the straight story on a serious political debate. Without a seat for a vice-presidential debate promoted like a boxing match Thursday at Centre College, it became my main event.
