    If there was ever a time I believed my one vote would matter, it was for this 2012 national election. Gene and I both registered to vote months ago and last week, Gene went in to cast his early ballot.

  5. Disparity in generic drug prices is a bitter pill to swallow

    Generic prescription drugs have to meet exacting standards for ingredients and quality, which you'd think would make them uniformly priced at pharmacies.

  7. Jordan makes secret appearance in federal courthouse

    A federal judge who labeled Michael Jordan's $5 million lawsuit against Dominick's food stores "greedy" ordered the former NBA star to appear in court this week for an off-the-record settlement conference in a locked courtroom.

  9. Review: 'Cooked' by Michael Pollan

    Michael Pollan went shopping for lunch in a Brooklyn, N.Y., supermarket, and the news made the New York Times. That the Times' Dining section had asked him to go, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Michael Moss, was the major reason, of course. But the idea of asking Pollan, the man who coined the dietary dictum, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants," to come down from the Mount Olympus of artisan food that is Berkeley, Calif., to shop with the hoi polloi in a regular ol' supermarket struck me as interesting, fun and, most of all, newsy.

  15. McManus: Mother knows best

    There are two things you can do for your mother on Mother's Day. One is to say "thank you." (Over lunch, with flowers.) The other is to ask her for advice — even if she's not convinced you really want it.

  19. Taggants: Still a better way to track a bomber

    A number of commenters on the online version of our April 28 Op-Ed,&nbsp; <a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-zoellner-taggants-boston-nra-20130428,0,3806681.story">"A better way to track a bomber,"</a> argue against the use of taggants to trace explosives because the suspects in the Boston bombings, the Tsarnaev brothers, were identified through other means -- namely the publicizing of videotape from the scene and the flood of resulting tips. That&rsquo;s certainly true. However, taggants at the scene might have brought about a quicker and cleaner investigation, and perhaps avoided the death of one law enforcement officer and a city held hostage. &nbsp;

  21. And down the stretch come those horse names

    What's in a name? Even a horse's name. Or even an imaginary horse's name. We got some great answers to that question in the past week during the revival of our pre-Kentucky Derby contest of naming a great Derby winner. To my delight, about 300 of...
